Land Evidence

The Town Clerk's office is responsible for recording all of the following types of records:

  • Affidavits
  • Certified copies of documents and other miscellaneous documents
  • Condominium declarations
  • Deeds
  • Leases
  • Mortgages
  • Quitclaim deeds

Records Process

Property records are recorded in the town or city where the property is located. Each city and town in the State of Rhode Island maintains its own property records. Recordings should be sent to the appropriate recording office according to the property address.


Recording, Copying & Accessing Documents

The State of Rhode Island mandates the fee schedule for the recording and copying of documents. The Portsmouth Town Clerk's office records documents from 8:30-4:15 Monday through Wednesday; 8:30-6:00 Thursday; and 8:30-2:00 Friday. Land evidence records can be accessed online and downloaded or printed for a fee at the U.S. land record online database resource.
